We weighed and measured four pairs of the $6.27 Polo Ralph Lauren multicolor shorts, rubbed the 3D print with white cotton, and folded them into our reference carton to see what a beginner actually receives.

The Polo Ralph Lauren multicolor shorts collection is a $6.27 beach short in thin, non-stretch polyester with an allover 3D-printed pattern, a drawstring waist and a straight hem, listed in sizes S through 5XL across blue, orange, red, yellow, navy, white and black. We ordered four pairs — size L in two colorways, plus a size S and a size 5XL — and put them through the bench routine rather than judging them from the listing photos. The angle here is transfer: a printed short that costs less than a sandwich is only useful if the pattern stays where it was printed and the parcel arrives light enough to consolidate.
What arrived, and what the listing promised
SKU 7720521196 landed at $6.27 against a stated original of $6.74, marked in stock, with a listed 2026 spring release and a stated 1–2 cm measurement tolerance. Each pair came in its own thin polybag with the drawstring already threaded through two metal eyelets. No hangtag, no care label in English on two of the four pairs — the size was printed on a small side-seam tab instead. That is worth knowing before ordering: if you rely on a wash instruction, you are guessing on at least some units.
The fabric hand is exactly what the listing says. Thin, dry, slightly papery polyester with no give in any direction. Held up to a window, the print is visible as a surface layer rather than a dyed-in yarn, which is the detail that drove the rest of this test.
Calipers and the postal scale
Every pair was laid flat, smoothed twice, and measured at three points. Weights are the shorts alone, polybag removed, on a postal scale accurate to 1 g.
| Size | Waist, flat (relaxed) | Inseam | Leg opening, flat | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | 35.0 cm | 15.5 cm | 27.5 cm | 118 g |
| L | 39.5 cm | 16.0 cm | 30.0 cm | 142 g |
| L (second colorway) | 40.0 cm | 16.0 cm | 30.0 cm | 145 g |
| 5XL | 52.0 cm | 17.5 cm | 36.5 cm | 205 g |
The two size L pairs sat 5 mm apart at the waist, which is inside the stated tolerance and reassuring for a listing at this price. The wider point stands: a 1–2 cm band at the waist means an L can legitimately arrive anywhere between 38.5 cm and 41.5 cm flat. If you are near a size boundary, ask the seller for flat measurements of the exact variant rather than picking from the chart alone. Brand-level Ralph Lauren guidance is no help here either — Classic-Fit, Custom-Fit and Slim-Fit are separate profiles, so the listing's fit type matters more than the label on the waistband tab.
The white-cloth rub test
We cut a 10 × 10 cm square of undyed cotton, loaded it with a 1 kg weight, and ran ten back-and-forth strokes across the densest part of the print on each pair. Then we repeated the run with 0.2 mL of water on the cloth.
- Dry rub: trace transfer on all four pairs — a faint grey shadow on the cloth, no visible change to the shorts.
- Wet rub: the blue and red colorways left a light blue tint on the cotton; the navy and black pairs left almost nothing.
- Edge check: the printed surface along the hem and side seam showed slight softening after the wet rub, consistent with a surface print on a thin fabric.
Bench note: the print survived the dry rub on every pair, but the wet-rub result is the reason we would not sit a soaked blue pair against a white towel or a pale car seat on the way home from the beach.
None of this is unusual for a $6.27 printed polyester short, and it does not make the item bad. It does mean the first wash should be cold, separate from light colours, and line-dried — which is also the fastest way to dry a fabric this thin.
Fold-to-carton: what four pairs do to a parcel
Because the site's routine is parcel-first, we replaced the folded garment in our reference load with these shorts and packed the small flat carton (30 × 20 × 10 cm). Four size L pairs, each left in its polybag, folded to a 28 × 18 cm footprint and stacked to 7 cm deep, filled roughly 78 percent of the carton volume and brought the parcel to 620 g before tape. There is enough headroom to add a padded box and a boxed figure, which is the combination most first-time buyers consolidate. Nothing shifted when we tilted the carton 45 degrees, and the three-step drop — corner, edge, face, from waist height onto flat concrete — left the polybags intact and no print scuffing on the folded outer surfaces.
Where the thin, zero-stretch build shows up in wear
The shorts hang straight and stay straight; the hem is genuinely level, within about 3 mm from side seam to centre on all four pairs. The trade-off is behaviour. With no stretch, the waist has to be right on the measurement, and the leg opening holds its shape rigidly when you sit, which reads a little stiff next to a jersey short. The drawstring eyelets are the lightest hardware in the build, and the channel is narrow enough that the cord bunches when pulled hard — we would knot rather than yank.
We also have to be honest about the evidence base. There is no independent buyer feedback for this exact listing, so everything above is our own bench data plus the listing facts. Brand-level material is only indicative: reviews of the Ralph Lauren online store skew heavily negative on fabric quality and sizing, while a Reddit replica review of RL polos found the material close to retail. Neither tells you what this specific shorts listing will feel like, so treat the fit type and fabric description as the things to confirm with the seller before you pay.
What we would confirm before ordering
- Which fit profile the listing follows, and flat waist and inseam measurements for your exact size and colorway.
- Whether multiple versions in the color grid share the same fabric — our four pairs did, but the grid is large enough that mixed stock is possible.
- Whether a care label is included, since two of our four pairs arrived without one in English.
How we tested
Four pairs (S, two L, 5XL) measured flat with calipers and weighed on a postal scale, then dry- and wet-rubbed with a weighted white cotton square. All four were folded into our 30 × 20 × 10 cm reference carton and given the three-step drop routine.
